A few days ago, I finished to write a small contribution for Fangrrrl.com, called Five Promising Women in Science Fiction Television Shows That Premiered in 2013. I am very happy about the opportunity as this website has a mindset and topics that mean much to me.
It was released a couple days ago and can be found at this link. In it, I discuss Astrid Finch (The Tomorrow People), Bo Adams (Believe), Lillian Strand (Intelligence), Melinda May (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and Sophia (Star-Crossed).
Star-Crossed 1.13 – Passion Lends Them Power: Drake and Taylor unsure of what they’re doing but trying their best given the accidental pregnancy is interesting, and I like that not everything is suddenly fine. I’m glad that Julia and her boyfriend were told about what happened with the Suvek, as I consider them as part of the group. Vega is a really great leader figure. I am still having a hard time figuring Teri out. Seeing her go with Emery to save Roman was a semi expected twist, but nevertheless a good one. Gloria finding out about Taylor’s pregnancy because she recognized the plant she was taking made sense given she also had a hybrid child with Nox a few years before. I liked when Roman told Teri how she truly is a healer. Thanks Lukas to find a possible trail for the group to find the Suvek. Atrians must really heal quickly, otherwise I would have thought Emery might have just killed Roman so soon after he was saved from imminent death. Thank God Emery eventually checked her phone. Gloria willing to help Taylor was a good thing, even though final choice is up to Taylor. Teri confronting her mother and her methods was a good development. I like how Teri isn’t clear cut in her path. Grayson also had solid character development. I didn’t expect the guardian of Eljida’s gates to come to Roman and introduce him to his half-brother. I still don’t get how Zoe made it out in one piece. She’s one manipulative and dangerous one. Taylor using her increased pregnancy strength against Zoe to rush away was a good moment. Gloria coming with a kick ass team to stop Vega and her people was outstanding. And seeing Teri surrender was meaningful. I really like how there were so many great and diverse female characters in this show! Learning that Teri tipped off Vega was great though I wonder who Teri’s father is. Julia giving a pep talk to her boyfriend showed her strength. The big team work to stop the Trags and preventing the bomb from exploding was epic! And this isn’t a way to end a show. This isn’t! How could this show get cancelled? All the humans left for dead or close to be, having the bomb actually be a signal for other Atrians, now coming to Earth with warships? I knew I would miss this show, but that ending, I need another season!

Believe 1.09 – Prodigy: I am sad that the show got cancelled as I think it still had so much potential and that the characters had developed solidly despite only a few episodes. I’m curious about the new girl they brought at Orchestra, and she can be quite scary. I really hope that they can get Channing out of the huge trouble she is in. Yet, I was mostly interested in the scenes regarding the current person to help with Tate and Bo. I love how they are bonding and how things are evolving. I like how they aren’t perfect either on their own or with each other. How the federal team and Skouras managed to get information from Channing with the new prodigy and then make their way to the safe house was suspenseful moments for sure. I really hope that someone can stop Skouras. I’m feeling sorry for the poor girl Bo helps because of how she is kept under her mother’s thumb. I was relieved when Skouras was caught by Milton. This is quite a confrontation and I’m glad that he did that to get Channing back. I like how Bo and her closed ones too, help people. I know that I repeat myself at every episode but this is the truth. I wanted to strangle Skouras myself when he shot at Milton and that Channing took the shot. And the new Orchestra prodigy definitely scares me.
Game of Thrones 4.05 – First of His Name: The scene between Cersei and Maergery was extremely interesting and a great moment between great actresses. Yet, I don’t understand how this scene unfolded. Cersei suddenly speaking about how Joffrey did horrid things and how she is civilized with Maergery and seems willing to have her there for her second born? It baffled me. I loved the scene between Ser Jorah and Daenerys! One of their best scenes in this seasons. I am relieved to see her take his advice and his support the way she does in this, because he realy his her friend and right hand, in opposition to the others. I don’t care for the scenes with Belish, Lysa, Robin and Sansa. In the whole bunch, I like Sansa best, that says a lot how I dislike all of them. I don’t like Sansa, but all this other bunch is so crazy and scheming I feel sorry for her to be there. Sansa was safer with Tyrion by her side in King’s Landing, in my view. Cersei speaking with her father about the upcoming royal wedding and looking fine with marrying Maegery’s brother all of the sudden still surprises me. I don’t understand Cersei’s change at all. I admit that this season tends to leave me scratching my head on several accounts. It was great to see Arya and the Hound again! They are some of the best parts in this season! I still wish that Arya had been the one to kill Joffrey. I never liked Lady Stark’s sister but I wish we didn’t have to put up with her madness. Brienne putting up with Podric having a hard time riding his horse cracked me up. The scene where the Hound and Arya discuss weapon training was also interesting, especially as this episode has very few moments that had me really care. I am very grateful for the scenes between Brienne and Podric. And what is the deal with sexual violence against women in this season? I am tired of this and I don’t see how it serves the plot! This really really angers me! I was relieved to see Jon Snow and the others Nightwatch members come to take care of that scum at the camp, but that other Crow kidnapping Bran wasn’t such a surprising twist and I was glad that he could be defeated. Bran deciding against reuniting with his brother was heartbreaking but showed great and strong personality. Jon fighting that filth and killing him was a meaningful moment and I also liked that one of the abused girls didn’t hesitate to hit that sadistic scum too. Jon and his wolf was one of the few happy moments in the episode. Seeing Craster’s keep burnt down was a relief, no matter how it can’t take away all the horrors that took place there.
Once Upon A Time 3.20 – Kansas: I was so happy when I heard that this show was renewed, as I had so many I liked getting cancelled. So knowing I’ll get a fourth season of this great show made me a very giddy camper. The storyline this season has been solid and I liked how some of the characters evolved. Regina’s change has been very well staged over the three seasons. Seeing her using light magic and saying how she makes her own destiny was one of my favorite moments of the whole season. Seeing Henry telling her she had to believe and wasn’t a villain anymore was powerful. Seeing them all be as a team, a family is one of the best things about this season. I was even surprised when David told Emma to keep Hook with her and support him about how he had been meaning to help her in the first place. I admit that while I really liked Emma in the earlier seasons, she leaves me rather indifferent now, and sometimes a bit annoyed. In a way, if she ended dying as the Savior, it could be one of the best story twists to happen and would leave her family with a lot to deal with and be a meaningful and sensible way for the character to go. I know that it might be some weird opinion, but the more I watch season 3, the more I think that. Regarding Rumplestiltskin and Belle, I was disappointed in him for lying to Belle, as I really thought he was better than this, as she told him. Anyway, I can’t wait for the season 2 hour finale!
Star-Crossed 1.12 – This Trick May Chance to Scathe You: This is another show that I already miss. I love how it has grown so strongly. I really liked how the team going after the Suvek was so unexpected with Roman, Drake, Sophia, Lukas, Emery and Grayson. I like how Drake has developed in the last while. In this episode, he had great scenes, including with his mother. I like how the female characters are interesting in this show, and are well layered and in multiple types of roles, both as teenagers and adult women. I even think that amongst the adult characters, the women are way more interesting than the men. I admit that the interaction between Castor and Teri is quite creepy to me. I also liked how Emery had to calm Grayson and Roman down, when they were being idiotic guys (as annoying as it could be it was credible anyway for different reasons). I wonder about Teri’s choices and allegiances. It is hard to tell with her, though I admit I prefer her mother Vega to Castor, which shows how much I can’t stand Roman’s uncle. I guess that Teri handling Castor shows she is loyal to her mother. I have no idea how they’ll heal Roman yet, though the Atrian’s healing skills and herbs tend to be quite extensive. I loved the scene when Drake explains to his mother why he can’t go to Eljida with her. They have beautiful scenes together. I liked how the final scene between Emery and Roman echoed the first time they met. Is it the season finale yet?!
The Tomorrow People 1.22 – Son of Man: First of all, I was really sad to learn about the show’s cancellation as it’s been one of my big favorites of the show premiering this season. I loved it to pieces and it had so much more potential. The characters had solid development and I know that I’ll have much to write about in the future. The scenes between Jedikiah and Roger in the beginning of the episode were extremely poignant (I liked how we found out that the human body rejects the paranormal powers even if injected). I cried a lot and I still think that Jedikiah reminds me a lot of Snape in Harry Potter. His interaction with John is always very interesting and many of their moments in the episode were emotional. It doesn’t mean that Jedikiah can be forgiven for what he does to John at the end, turning him into some kind of super soldier again, but the character is still one of the most interesting “villains” I’ve seen in a very long while. The reason I was annoyed with that last arc is that it’s the only thing that really feels as a mini cliffhanger in the show, otherwise I loved how wrapped up things felt, even with the solid potential for more season. Seeing the team saving the world with Stephen, Cara, Russel, John and Astrid was really great. I was glad to see them all survive in the end, though I’m curious of how Stephen’s powers could expand. Seeing the Stephen/Cara and John/Astrid romantic direction also made me incredibly happy (and I can’t help but know that Astrid could have helped John go beyond whatever programming he underwent in a second season). There were still very great dialogues and thank you for funny bits in the middle of so much intense drama! The kiss between John and Astrid before time was frozen for them reminded me of Crichton and Aeryn at the end of Farscape 4.22 Bad Timing. All in all, I am very much missing this show and can’t wait for the right time and opportunity to write about this as there is a lot I want to talk about. I don’t know whether it’ll be in papers or a possible eBook, but I know that this show will show up in my future research and writing.

I know it has been a while since I posted any review of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episodes, but I’m planning to watch the last four episodes of the season in a row and post a general review for them (as I will also do for Continuumseason 3, Crisisand The 100 seasons 1). I am very very happy that Agents of S.H.IE.L.D. got renewed for a second season as I love it. And I can’t wait for the upcoming Marvel’s Agent Carter new show as well!
Once Upon A Time 3.19 – A Curious Thing: I like that we continue to see more that happened during the missing year. Aurora finally admitted what she did was needed in my view. I’m not surprised that the Wicked Witch didn’t keep her word and turned Aurora and her husband into flying monkeys. Seeing the group together even during the missing year is great. Grumpy had a good line and I loved seeing Robin telling Regina he was here to save her ass was great. The scene in the present between Regina and Robin is great, cute, funny and touching! They’re growing on me so much and I like that they have a better build up than I was expecting in the first place. Henry walking up on them kissing in the hallway was heart breaking because he called her Madam Mayor. The more we have the team meetings when they try to figure out how to take Zelena down are made of awesome. I like that it goes back to finding the folk tale book. And Hook still standing up to Zelena is great, and she is one hell of a villain.

Robin: That door almost took your arm.
That definitely reminded me of Han and Leia in Star Wars, and I was almost expecting them to banter about the trash compactor and the Millenium Falcon. I also like how Belle has been trying to reach out to Rumplestiltskin both in the missing year and in the Storybrooke present. I love when Regina says that they all need to believe again. It was very touching. I didn’t see it coming when Emma suddenly told Henry to just deal with what she was saying. And I have to say that I’m in love with so much of the Fairy Tale world fashion. there are so many gorgeous outfits, fancy swords and assorted items I am fangirling over. I’m still surprised that Snow White is a character I really enjoy. It seems that I only like the character in some of the recent incarnations. I find the flying monkeys so creepy. Great team work for taking them down! Henry remembering and calling Regina Mom gave me misty eyes. It’s one huge moment that Zelena had to mess up of course. Emma showing she learned new things thanks to Regina was a relief, against Zelena. David willing to give up his life for their children, for his wife shows how great he is again. This episode has so many emotional moments. Regina being able to bring the memories back by kissing Henry was another beautiful moment. It also makes sense that it wasn’t Emma since Emma is already the savior. The way Snow asked Regina to divide her heart to bring David back to life was extremely brilliant! Henry teasing Regina about Robin was funny! Hook getting blamed and untrusted by everything when he did what he could based on what he knew was sad. Finding out that Neal made sure that Hook would get the message and get to Emma was one crazy twist! The final scene when Henry says that Operation Cobra is back on was a great line. And I can’t wait for the next episode especially with Snow’s baby coming!
Star-Crossed 1.11 – Give Me a Torch: Sophia is still my favorite character. I adore her. She is strong, kind, smart, funny, witty. I like her friendship with Emery and Taylor. Her scene when Taylor asks her why she is so nice with her was so great and compelling. Taylor’s pregnancy doesn’t bring any shock, as we already knew that Atrians and Humans could conceive together, but seriously, can’t sexually active people take their precautions? I was a bit sorry for Julia when her date for the dance just went with his buddies but when he came to save the day when she froze on stage? That was so sweet! I like their interaction and so far there is no crazy stuff happening in their relationship, so that’s refreshing. Grayson picking up the Red Hawks again doesn’t make me comfortable at all, but at least he opposites the former man from them who’s much more extremist. The political mess is still very interesting. I never liked Castor but even less now. Vega is a dangerous but more interesting character in my view. I wonder how her issues with her daughter are going to develop, especially with Castor trying to manipulate Teri and that she helped him. I’m glad that Grayson helped Emery but please don’t bring up the love triangle again, with these two and Roman. Seriously. I can understand Emery keeping her distance with Roman for a bit, but her possible going back to Grayson annoys me. I thought it was great that Taylor told Drake about the pregnancy. And I like the talk between Roman and Drake. I like how Drake is willing to help and be there for Taylor, no matter the risks and how he had to give up on her in the first place. I’m shocked on Emery attending the new Red Hawks meeting, and Roman catching sight of it. Beautiful scene between Roman and his mother at the end of the episode.
The Tomorrow People 1.21 – Kill Switch: This show is turning into a favorite of mine (I know I have a very long list of favorites but still). I love the development and how solid the story and the characters have grown. I’m still in shock of how Hilary sacrificed herself in hope to take the Founder down. Too bad this horrible villain wasn’t killed yet. I hope he dies soon. The whole episode was pretty epic and had so many emotional moments. John having been stripped from his powers is a very powerful plot decision. I think that him walking away from Cara isn’t just because of the stripped powers. The scene between Cara and Stephen when she talks about her feelings was a great moment too and showed how much she has to deal with and put on the strong facade no mater what, because she is a leader. While I thought John and Cara had rekindled their relationship, it has been clear for a while that they weren’t on the same wavelength for certain things. I mean Cara is the one who had had a one night stand with Stephen and who still pulled the jealous card with him out of the blue when he was with Hilary. The same way, he had had several great moments with Astrid, and I loved their discussion and how Astrid straightened some things out with him. John/Astrid is my favorite couple, along with Roger/Marla. I was very glad to see Roger and Marla reconnect. The moment when she shows that she is skilled despite not having had the same kind of training was very useful. It made all the more sense for when Jedikiah gets his power at the end can use them without them being too much of a mess (which also works because of how much observation and studying he has done on the paranormal people over the past decades). The mess that happens among the Tomorrow People, including Russel’s decision to take Roger to the Founder doesn’t have any less reasons to do this than Roger’s wanting to take the Founder down his own way. It was a big step to find more about the genetic mutation as well. As for the insane ending with everything falling into pieces? I can’t wait for the finale!

Game of Thrones 4.02 – The Lion and the Rose: It was a great episode, very well executed. I loved the scene between Jaime and Tyrion. The infamous quote “To the proud Lannister children! The dwarf, the cripple and the mother of madness!” was memorable! Cersei annoys the hell out of me even further. Tyrion breaking up with Shae was heartbreaking. And I feel bad for Tyrion for being humiliated so much by Joffrey at the wedding. I was glad when Sansa helped him, but I’m not sure that her flying away is so smart, especially given how the next episode opens. I love Margaery’s grandmother! Her talk with Tywin Lannister was priceless! Cersei accusing Tyrion at once, hating on Brienne and still thinking that Joffrey is perfect means that I won’t cry when she dies. As for Joffrey dying, I didn’t see it coming this way. I’m relieved he’s finally dead, but I am almost sad because it didn’t happen as I was hoping it would!
Game of Thrones 4.03 – Breaker of Chains: Sansa falling into Baelish’s claws will probably be troublesome, given how much of a manipulative sleaze this pest is. Tywin grooming Cersei’s second song is going to be interesting and I wasn’t surprised when he criticized Joffrey given the arrogant little spoiled brat he was. I like that Jaime is now willing to think more for himself and not just be Cersei’s doormat all the time. The fighting and sex next to dead Joffrey was awkward and creepy. As much as I can’t stand Cersei, she didn’t deserve what happens to her, i.e. Jaime raping her. I know that Jaime is going through a lot too, but I had thought that he had become better than that, better than ending raping someone, no matter how she had toyed with him in the past. That doesn’t make me like Cersei any better, but that certainly like Jaime less, because what he did has no excuse, no matter how you look at it. I’m glad to see Arya again, she is one of my favorite characters! Her interaction with the Hound is always priceless! It was good to see Sam again as he is such a good man and interesting character. Tyrion is such a great character! I like how he wants to protect Podrick! It’s good to see Jon Snow again! I loved the interaction between Daenerys and Ser Jorah.
Star-Crossed 1.09 – Some Consequence Yet Hanging in the Stars: The whole politics within and between both Atrians and humans is still what I like best about the show. I wonder how Castor might get stopped. I found it interesting to see more abuot how the crash happen, and I am already worried about what the Trags are going to do with the new device Saroya is going to build. And I was glad to see Emery help to save the day. I also feel sorry for Sophia who got turned down by Taylor. It was no surprise and Sophia was great to try it anyway. I like Taylor and Drake together, but I would still find it great to see a non heterosexual couple in the show. Of course, I hope that if it happens, it works well and has real chemistry. I’m liking Emery a bit more in this episode and hope that Roman can keep the trust from his people. Vega is really great as leader of the Trags and I find it good that there are so many female characters in important and pivotal roles in the show.
Star-Crossed 1.10 – What Storm Is This That Blows So Contrary: The lockdown was a smart idea, given how it is done. Seeing Roman completely different was so weird. I want to strangle Grayson with how he tries to ruin everything. I wonder whether Sophia is going for Lukas, because she knows he has a crush on her and was turned down by Taylor. I find them cute together, but I hope it’s not just rebound for Sophia if she ends with him. I don’t know whether Teri just wants Roman back or just wants to create more mess. I’m relieved that Roman snaps out of things when Teri pounces him, though talk about a mess when Julia and Emry walks in. That whole episode is relationship mess for sure. I was sorry for Drake and Taylor too. Miss Benton is one good villain in how she is ready to go for her research. I mean her goals aren’t bad per se, but the way she goes about it, is certainly manipulative and mean. I’m sorry for Julia as well. I find it great that Lukas is able to find that the storm isn’t normal and works on finding out what is happening. It’s also great to see the girls teaming up, Julia and Emery, to help Teri, no matter what happened. Lukas and Sophia talking about what they should do about the storm after they found out how things are. Both their points of view are valid. Seeing Gloria arresting Miss Benton and her associate was one good moment and a huge relief! I didn’t see it cmoing at the end that Taylor would kiss Sophia! And all of this is a mess, because I don’t like love triangles or squares and I’m sorry for characters when they make choices for bad reasons. Julia and the other guy whose name I don’t remember getting together at the end made me happy, because they aren’t tangled in other people’ mess. I’m also relieved that Roman makes amends to Emery, though I’m not surprised they’ll be at odds for a bit.
The Tomorrow People 1.19 – Modus Vivendi: This show is growing so rich and strong. The early episodes when I wonder whether I would continue, before always getting hooked again at the end of every episode, seem in another lifetime. The opening of this one was so great! Jedikiah is such an interesting and layered character! I am glad to see how complex he is and see him stick with his family and not just be a villain. The Founder really scares me. There were so many feels and emotions in this episode. I was very happy to see the girl moment between Cara and Astrid, I am always a happy camper when we see Astrid. I liked that she was more prominently featured in these last two episodes. The party between Ultra and Tomorrow People was quite unique, no matter what happened next. Seeing the relation between Jedikiah and John was interesting as always, and I also liked when John went to bring Marla to the underground shelter to resuscitate her husband, Roger. All the ending of the episode was so emotional and powerful. I was grateful for my box of tissues between the ending and then the beginning of the next one.
The Tomorrow People 1.20 – A Sort of Homecoming: I liked how everyone had to deal with Roger’s return, between him wanting to return to his family, the Tomorrow People wanting to be taken to the Refuge, and Cara and John trying to juggle with the situation. Hillary had started to grow on me in the previous episode, and even with the (not so surprising) revelation of her being a mole after she had helped Stephen, I was hoping that she would still help. I am still in shock at how she went down with the Founder (that I suspect of surviving, given how indestructible he seems). I found it very powerful of Hillary went to seek Astrid’s help. I thought it was a very good story twist. I really hate the Founder and hope he can really be stopped. I smirked when Russel said, about Ultra: “Yeah, it’s like Steve Jobs redid the Death Star.” There is so much mess going on with everyone. And I wonder how things are going to turn out. As for the final scene? That was one epic exit for Hillary, and I was even sad of what happened to her, but I’m glad she could leave with a bang.

In the past week, I have been doing my best to relax because of my burnout and I hope that by early or mid May, I will be back on track. It is really weird not being able to focus on writing projects, but sometimes you have to listen to your body and brain. Okay, when it comes to the brain, you always have to listen to this pretty and creative devil!
In the upcoming couple of weeks, I hope to post a blog announcement which I hope might spark new collaborations down the road. I already have some points jolted down but I need to sit down more to put it in the right words so it makes most sense.
I have fallen on the way side of TV watching, since I have mostly been playing Torchlight II in the last days. I am watching the currently airing shows:

I am planning to continue watching all of them, but it is likely that I wait until Crisis, and maybe The 100 seasons are over to get back into them. I find good things in both shows, but I am not as deep into them as the others, so far. The rest, I will continue watching as it airs, except when I fall a bit behind as it is the case this week. Later this year, I also want to watch Angel‘s final season and continue to catch up with My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. I am also waiting for Beauty and the Beast to return in June, as well as Defiance and Falling Skies, and I’ll try The Last Ship when it starts.
Believe 1.05 – White Noise: It was one of my favorite episodes since the show started. I loved seeing so much of the team together, including Channing. The relationship between Tate and Bo continues to become closer. It is interesting to see how alike they can be in certain ways. The group taking refuge in a church completely reminded me of some Highlander moments, and I found it a nice touch. I liked seeing more of Bo drawing and painting and I hope they continue to explore this angle in her precognition gifts. I loved the scene between the future mother and Tate when she tells him that he was the one Bo asked to bring her plus tortoise, Stanley, back to her. It was an extremely acute and lovely moment. Bo being scared of her power and not wanting it anymore in the end of the episode, doubled with her “freeing” Tate were very emotional moments.
Continuum3.04 – A Minute Changes Everything: This show is so brilliant, and I know that I tend to say that with every single review I post. I found it interesting to bring back Alec’s brother and how Liber8 still inspire some of the youth. It poses important questions about ideas and means. I also like how we still have glimpses of Kiera’s life in the future (i.e. flash back from the future). It gives further insight into her personality and background. I wonder how downward Carlos might spiral given the scene when he goes to speak to the other Kiera’s corpse at the morgue. I think that using Becky as a bait for Liber8 now that they outed her is going to make for an interesting arc development. The scene where both Alec met was mind blowing and I wonder whether they will ever interact again. I still am unsure of how both Alec will end relating to Emily as I’m a bit confused on that matter.
Crisis1.03 – What Was Done To You: I missed not seeing Meg Fitch (Gillian Anderson) in this episode, but it was a really solid one. I think that showing how far parents can go to get their children back is a brilliant plot idea. I like how Special Agents Finley and Dunn work together and their team evolves, given the short time they have been working together due to this crisis. I still don’t really care about any of the kids who are held hostages. So the less we see them, the better, for me. I want to be more invested in their well being, but I just don’t really manage to. What matters to me in their survival is for their parents. I like Anton though.
Crisis 1.04 – We Were Supposed to Help Each Other: I understand why Dunn wants no one to interfere in her investigation but I still don’t find her such a pleasant character. In that, I like Finley much more, though they make a great team. I wonder how things will go and whether Meg and her company will be able to find more with her resources now that she got access, thanks to the White House, to further documents. I found the whole affair matter regarding Meg’s former collaborator kind of cliché and a bit lame though.
Once Upon A Time 3.15 – Quiet Minds: I love this show and this episode didn’t disappoint! I’m glad that we get to see more of what happened in that missing year. The explanation of the voices and how Gold saved Neal – at least for a while – was very compelling. I also like how we still see how he cares about Belle (just as in the next episode when she tries to reach out to him). Seeing Neal return was one heck of a shock and I definitely cried when he died. I loved seeing Hook help him get on his way. The day that blasted Wicked Witch will meet her fate won’t come soon enough.
Once Upon a Time 3.16 – It’s Not Easy Being Green: The funeral scene was a beautiful and heart wrenching scene. All of them gathered as they were, it really spoke of family. I was very happy to see Tinker Bell in this episode again as she is a great character. I love her discussion/argument with Regina when Tink realizes that Robin is the one with the lion tattoo. Regina’s line “I think I would remember if my mother told me she had a lovechild with the Scarecrow.” was priceless and made my day. The more I watched Regina and Robin banter the more I loved them together. I like how their interaction is so far and it doesn’t feel rushed as it could have been. I also liked Hook taking Henry to his boat and tell him what he could about his father. I like that while Hook has feelings for Emma he still had genuinely taken care of Neal for years in the past and thus cared for him and Henry too due to that. It was interesting to see some of the Wicked Witch’s history but I still don’t like her though she is a great villain. I still am for sure on Team Regina whenever there is a showdown between Zelena and Regina!
Star-Crossed 1.08 – An Old Accustom’d Feast: This show keeps growing on me with every episode. I found it smart that since they had revealed what the biology teacher was really up to, she approached Julia and then forced her into the deal in this episode. It was better than if they had delayed it too long as it adds to the general web of influences and political games and threats which are at stake. It was great to see the humans invited to the Atrian celebration. I liked how Sophia understood who Emery was because of the star she created for the Atrian kids. It also made a lot of sense that Roman’s and Sophia’s mother didn’t really see well that the humans were invited, especially Emery, though the explanation of why she showed up later on at the gathering worked well. Drake is becoming a more interesting and layered character and I was happy to see that the Atrian returned from the crate was his mother. Their reunion was a very touching moment. The accidental discovery Emery made because of the Atrian device was a clever plot twist too. And I’m glad that the love triangle is over as I don’t like them.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. 1.16 – End of the Beginning: It was a solid episode and threw the team off balance for sure. I was happy to see Skye become an official SHIELD agent. My favorite characters are still Coulson and May (and Fitz and Simmons my least favorite ones). The way the Clairvoyant was uncovered through the process of knowledge gathering was well done and I thought that it was a good twist. I really wonder what exactly May is up to and with whom. The episode definitely left us hanging with an evil cliffhanger. I can’t wait for the next episode and I hope that the team can sort things out, but they are in one hell of a mess for sure!
Believe1.04 – Defection: I like the spirit of this show and I like how Bo has a gift and calling to help people. Maybe to some it might sound cheesy, but I think that such goodness is really a nice way of developing the show and the character, especially since Bo is still a girl her age and is far from perfect. Seeing the flashbacks of how Skouras pushed Bo when she was under his wing and how Winters was shocked and then eventually decided to defect with some of the team brought further insight on why the characters left as such, to protect Bo. I couldn’t help smiling and being brought back to my childhood when I saw Bo discovering the hidden letter and ring behind a brick in the wall, as it reminded me so much of The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, both the novel and also the 1987 film adaptation that reminds my favorite screen version of the story.
Continuum3.03 – Minute to Win It: This show is so brilliant. My poor brain has a hard time computing everything on a regular basis, but I love how they have come so far since an already strong premise in the first season. It isn’t always easy to have a story grow as well as its characters, but the Continuum cast and crew keeps blowing my mind every single week. Going back to Kiera and Carlos against Liber8 is entertaining. I also wonder what this device Kiera could retrieve and brought to the Freelancers can be. Her relationship with both Alec, truth and lies, is still extremely interesting and sometimes heart wrenching. Alec going through the discovery of who Escher was to him was also a great opportunity for his character, as well as what he uncovered about Emily. I wonder how everything will continue to unfold.
Star-Crossed 1.07 – To Seek a Foe: This show keeps growing on me with each episode. My favorite characters are still Julia, Sophia, Lukas and Roman. I admit that Drake and even Taylor might be growing on me with the latest two episodes, which is a surprise. I also hope we get to see more of Teri soon, as she had a lot of potential. Emery still doesn’t interest me that much, though she annoys me less than in earlier episodes. Sophia is an amazing character and I was very happy when she decided to help Lukas and not let Roman save the world alone as she told him. It was important. It is ironic how the main love story doesn’t interest me that much but that I find the show compelling in the friendships and general Atrian and human story lines.
The 100 1.03 – Earth Kills: I miss seeing much above the station in the present time in this episode, as I really love the dual story line aspect of the show and think this is one of its strengths. Of course, being able to see the flash back scenes was a great way to make up for it, but still. It was interesting to gain insight in the past regarding the Jaha and Griffin families. The scene when Clarke’s father was airlocked was extremely emotional and they really got me with this one. Wells was one of my favorite characters from the start and he grew even more on me in this episode and I love his scenes with Clarke. This is why the final scene of the episode wasn’t only a shock but really a disappointment. Seeing one of my favorite characters get axed so early in a show really sucks. It was also interesting to see the interaction between Bellamy and Clarke. For the first time, in his scene with Charlotte, Bellamy wasn’t annoying to me. I still enjoy the show but the final scene left a sour taste in my mouth, I admit.
The Tomorrow People 1.18 – Smoke and Mirrors: This episode was one of the best of the season so far, in my view. It was brilliantly done for the most part and the characters had some great moment, especially the ones between Jedikiah and John. The whole chess aspect and them discussing the present and future was some of my favorite moments. The double date kind of scene with Cara, John, Hillary and Stephen made me laugh a lot. It is interesting how I found this episode so compelling on a main arc level, but was annoyed with different things with the characters. I’m happy to see John and Cara be well together again so I found it stupid to have Cara be jealous of Stephen’s private life. It was kind of ridiculous and counter intuitive in my view. As for Stephen and Hillary? Really? I just don’t care for it. I think that Hillary has been benefiting from more character development than I had first expected, but I still just don’t see her and Stephen together.
I’m finally caught up with episodes from the past two weeks, and find myself with eleven episodes to review. So, I decided to break it into two posts, otherwise this would just be way too huge. I tried to find a way to organize, and ended putting the shows for which I have two episodes to comment on instead of one. It accidentally turns into a CW show review! I didn’t even think about that when I first came up with the order.
The Tomorrow People 1.16 – Superhero: Over the past few weeks, I kept saying that the show has found its pace and was becoming more solid. I confirm with these latest two episodes. The time when I sometimes wondered whether I would keep watching (always to be inspired to do so by the episodes’ ending) seems such a long time ago. I have no problem with shorter seasons if it means the show lasts a few seasons, but I’m nevertheless very happy to be able to enjoy some shows that still last 22 episodes per season like this one. I liked the ‘Scarlet Avenger’ idea developed in this episode and I hope we will see more of them again. It is good to see about other groups of gifted people out there. I was also happy to see more of Russel’s past as he is one of my favorite characters. Can I say I also love the super computer, Tim? I don’t remember if it was in this episode or the following one but when he wants to tell the characters something and they’re sleeping and says “Wake up! I’m not a bloody alarm clock!”, I found it hilarious! Seeing John and Cara back together made me happy. I thought it was interesting that Stephen could find his father’s body so “early”, as I was more or less expecting it to happen in the season finale. I still can’t figure Jedikiah out. He is a fascinating character to me. Oh and the scene when Hillary kisses Stephen? I didn’t see this one coming. I was very much “what the hell?” during it. I think it was also smart to uncover more about her past in this episode.
The Tomorrow People 1.17 – Endgame: It was interesting to see the latest breakout being Cara’s younger sister, Sofie. The reunion between both sisters and how Sofie didn’t want the life of a Tomorrow People added to how everyone can act differently and show how the life of a fugitive is difficult. I admit that while I liked how Cara gave the bracelet to prevent her sister’s powers from manifesting, I wondered how Sofie would justify wearing such a device all the time, especially as a ballet dancer as the costumes don’t really help hiding it. I wish we had seen more of Astrid in the episode, as she is one of my favorite character and always wish she had a more prominent role in the show. Regarding how all hell breaks loose regarding Stephen, Jedikiah and the Founder, I don’t know what to believe. I mean, Jedikiah is a very complex character and no angel, but I don’t like the Founder either. His hurt at the loss of his daughter seemed genuine, but given what he had put her through, it isn’t enough to erase what he did. I was glad to see more about Jedikiah and his brother Roger through the flashbacks. I really don’t know how things are going to go from there. So much can happen in the next five episodes! I’m looking forward to whatever whirlwind happens!
Star-Crossed 1.05 – Dreamers Often Lie: I’m glad that the show continues to focus on the political and societal aspect of the cohabitation and confrontation between humans and Atrians, as well as what happens within each groups because of subfactions. This is what interests me most in the show, though I really do like some of the characters as well, like Julia, Lukas, Sophia and Roman for the most part. I find that Teri is becoming more interesting in the past couple of episodes. I don’t dislike Emery, but she tends to annoy me at times. Finding out that Eljida actually exists so early in the show surprised me, though we didn’t actually see it. While I would have rooted for Lukas and Sophia as a couple, I found it great that Sophia admitted having an interest in someone else, in Taylor. I thought that making a non heterosexual female alien character was a great move though I was surprised that she had a crush on Taylor. I’m curious to see where things might lead given how intricate everybody’s crushes are.
Star-Crossed 1.06 – Stabbed with a White Wench’s Black Eye: It wasn’t my favorite episode. The whole tabloid reporter story bored me and kind of came out of nowhere in my view. The whole love triangle Grayson/Emery/Roman also made me yawn at times, though I loved the scene between Roman and Emery where he tells her he doesn’t have the right to ask her to wait because they can’t be together now. Okay, that scene got me. And how did Roman show up at Emery’s house in plain daylight, out of the sector, when they’re not at school in the last scene when he sees her comforting Grayson? I scratched my head on this one. One thing that I like in the show is that there women are shown in leadership positions, like Gloria Garcia at the high school and being a liaison with the US Government for the Integration project, Vega with the Trags and Grayson’s mother, matriarch of the Red Hawks. I’m also more and more intrigued about Eva Benton, the biology teacher.
The 100 1.01 – Pilot: Just like when I tried Star-Crossed, I didn’t really have big expectations when I checked The 100 pilot. Within ten minutes, I was hooked and I didn’t change my mind after being done with the second episode. The show feels like some mix between The Hunger Games and After Earth, with a zest of LOST. As always, I spotted tons of actors I saw before, but I always find it fun, except when it’s actors I can’t stand, but it wasn’t the case here. I’m happy to see Isaiah Washington in an interesting and important role again. I remembered having seen comments about the diversity in this show, but I also found that they did rather well with cast and characters. I think they also do a good job with information dumping so to speak. I’m far from being that interested in all the younger main cast, but most of the adult one are pretty interesting. I like how there is the dual story between what happens on Earth and what goes on aboard the space station.
The 100 1.02 – Earth Skills: Just like in Star-Crossed, I don’t really care for all the romance part, or possible romance, so it’s secondary to me. I am more interested in the survival part of the story, both on Earth and aboard the space station. I am very curious about what is really going on with the grounders. The scene where Octavia is covered in some kind of blue butterflies totally reminded me of a scene in the movie Avatar. I like Clarke but I like her mother, Abigail, even more, I admit. I think that Abigail Griffin is my favorite grown up character while Wells Jaha, the councilman’s son, is the one for the group of teenager. I like that Abigail was given 10 days to prove that Earth was viable and find more about what is going on with the hundred teenagers sent there. Big stakes like that make sense, especially with a 13 episode season. It gives a little 24 feel with how urgent things are. The show has a pretty decent and interesting start and I hope that it has an even better development with the rest of the season.
