TV Review: The Last Ship (Season 1)

I remember stumbling on The Last Ship trailer by accident on YouTube. I knew from that moment that I would watch the show when it came out. I liked the story idea, the settings and the three lead actors were people I like (Eric Dane, Rhona Mitra and Adam Baldwin). Yet, I didn’t have the opportunity to check the show until it had already been confirmed for a second season. In a way, it made things even more exciting as I knew that I would have at least two seasons of this if I liked it.

I was hooked from the first episode and it only got better as the season went. It made me think of somewhat of a mix between World War Z and Battleship, but I liked this even more than the two movies mentioned. There was a lot more character development than I first thought there might be, which is always a good thing.

There are many supporting characters aboard the ship that are interesting, and I liked that they are diverse, in ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation. Notably the fact that a junior deck officer, Alisha Granders mentioned her girlfriend several times in conversation, and how she hopes that she is still okay and that she can find her. It was shown as normal as anyone else talking about their loved ones still out there, or those that might be dead. Besides dramatic and action packed moments, the show has a very organic development in its story and for its characters.

There were a lot of little things here and there that made me care for most of the characters. I didn’t always know which dynamic would develop in a good or a conflictual way. I liked seeing characters tested on several levels.

The ending left me blinking at the screen. I can’t wait for season 2 to start. And we’ll get 13 episodes instead of 10 this time!
