A Galaxy of Possibilities: Discussing Character Writing, Diversity, Star Wars and Fandom – Week 1: Introduction

GalaxyofpossibilitiesLOGO2

Welcome to A Galaxy of Possibilities: Discussing Character Writing, Diversity, Star Wars and Fandom! This series will be posted as a Tuesday weekly feature. It will last thirty six episodes and I hope that many will join the discussion, whether you are an author, a Star Wars fan, and/or someone interested in diversity in cultural and media representations. Storytelling is extremely diversified and belongs to many people, not only the industries but also to the fans and the wide span of authors that range from amateur to professional, or even some hybrid possibilities for one can be a professional in a certain genre and still enjoy fan writing, roleplaying, fan fiction or else, as a hobby.

Every installment of this series will focus on some of my roleplaying characters that I write at the Star Wars board SWRPG.net. I joined the community in July 2008 after a google search, and it has become my online home since then. While I did some other brief attempts at roleplaying both in the Star Wars universe and a couple of others, I never stuck around the other places. The settings and people at SWRPG is where I (along with my zoo of characters) belong.

The stories we write on the board take place 16-22 years after the battle of Yavin (end of Episode IV: A New Hope). We aren’t allowed to write canon characters (or legend ones, as the distinction now exists). Our original characters must be affiliated to an existing faction: Jedi, Sith, Dark Jedi, New Republic, Imperial or Hutt Cartel (pirates, mercenaries, smugglers and bounty hunters).

Banner made for the board's 10th anniversary in February 2013.

Banner made for the board’s 10th anniversary in February 2013, featuring members from Jedi, Sith, Dark Jedi, Imperial and Republic leaderships.

I currently write 29 different characters spread across the six factions. I also used to write others that are now deleted, per my request. I believe that failures are part of the learning process which is why I decided to include analysis and discussions about these deleted characters, as it wouldn’t feel right not to mention them.

The series will be sorted out by faction and mostly alphabetical order within each of them. The deleted characters will be regrouped in a single post per affiliation, while every active ones will benefit from a post of their own. I will include illustrations both in the posts and on Tumblr, links to the active characters’ Wiki pages and to relevant Wookieepedia ones too.

If you are interested in joining the discussion, you will be able to do so via WordPress, Tumblr, Twitter and emails. By making this series a weekly feature, I am leaving room to include follow up posts to a given installment, in case questions or feedback call for them.

  • Did you ever write in the Star Wars universe?
  • Do you have interest and/or roleplaying experience?
  • What are you mostly looking forward to in this blog series?

29 Characters?? Blimey! 😀 That’s pretty impressive you can keep up with it.

I used to be on a lot of play-by-post RPG forums, which were great fun and I loved a lot. They helped spur my passion for writing.

It is good writing and brain flexibility practice! RPing helps me a lot to keep my non fiction/academic muses flowing. I enjoy RPing just for fun, but it is also a good warm up when I need it. May I ask which fictional universe(s) you used to write in?

Natacha: You always introduce me to something new. I’m sure age plays a role in what I do not know about what is available on the Internet. I didn’t know that role-playing sites existed, and I enjoyed going to the link you provided. These sites seem to be a great starting place for budding writers to hone their character development skills. Participation should be part of a writing course. Development and fun at the same time. Thanks for sharing. Jennie

I am glad that you enjoy the posts even when I speak about topics you aren’t familiar with. I like this site a lot because it is welcoming and being PG-13, it is a rather family friendly place. We do write about heavy matters and difficult storylines, but nothing that wouldn’t be in a movie rated PG-13. Members age from 13 to late 40’s and some have been participating there (or in the communities that existed prior to the actual forum) for 15 years. It is always interesting to see how the Internet can be viewed as something ephemeral and nevertheless has such long term communities.

I do write in the Star Wars universe with existing characters. I’m a hopeless romantic, so whatever stories I’ve written have been fluff and romance. I also have roleplayed! Very cool stuff, but I mainly keep it separate and don’t really divulge it to anyone. I’m looking forward to what you’ll be bringing to the table! This sounds really interesting!

I’m not surprised that you write in the Star Wars universe! As you’ll see in the upcoming episodes of this series, I function best when my characters have a significant other, so you’ll see mentions of relationships and such! I’m so happy to see such good reactions to this introductory week!

Yeah! lol, I’ve been part of the SWRPG.net forum since Dec. 2004. I was introduced there by a friend who wanted someone to rp with whom he could bug in real life. I’ve always liked to write, but never attempted anything big. The site was a fantastic way for me to start showing others my writing skills and honing my own. I’ve learned a lot and my confidence in my writing grew over the years to the point where I am now. I wouldn’t be here on wordpress or even writing novels, if it wasn’t for the community at SWRPG.net.

I’ll always remember that it was you/N’yssa who accepted Satkia in the Jedi Order when I first joined! I still feel like a newbie at times, in comparison to you guys who have been around for much longer! I’m glad that SWRPG helped you that much and that you’re now on WordPress and writing novels!

I’m very much looking forward to this! I’ve written some short stories with original characters in the Star Wars universe. I also play SWTOR and have a lot of fun with character creation there.

Thank you! Character creation on SWTOR was always so great! I played the game quite extensively until June last year and I always had to try as many combinations as possible (though I always stuck with female characters).
